connected devices CIM Connected devices to reach 33 billion by 2020There will be four connected devices for every person on the planet by 2020, according to a new survey.

The study, from Strategy Analytics, found that there will be 33 billion devices connected to the internet by the end of the decade. Currently, there are 12 billion online machines in operation, equating to 1.7 items per person. The humble PC makes up just 10 per cent of this figure, highlighting the need for organisations to adopt a multi-channel CiM strategy.

The forecast will be of great interest to those businesses looking to enhance their customer service offering, with the survey demonstrating the continuing growth and diversity of available contact channels.

Reporting on the research, Tim Mayton from MobileMarketingMagazine.com stated:

“The mix will continue to move away from PCs and smartphones, with smart homes, wearables and IoT devices representing the core areas of growth. Beyond that, developers for every industry should expect internet connectivity to become ubiquitous in most objects and across large parts of the world.”

The unprecedented rise in internet-connected devices is partly fuelled by the growth of wearable technology and IoT devices; items attached to the Internet of Things currently account for 40 per cent of connections. The technology has huge implications for those in customer service, allowing organisations to reduce operational costs through automation by reducing the need for individuals to report an issue or re-order a product.

In March 2014, David Cameron pledged an additional £45 million of government funding to develop initiatives supporting the Internet of Things. Speaking at the time, the UK Prime Minister said that the technology would be a “huge transformative development.”
