mobile retail applications Top US retail apps highlight successes of multi channel engagement The top retail apps in the United States were revealed this week as Amazon topped the App Annie internet retailer index for the first quarter of 2014. The online retailer was ranked ahead of Groupon, Cartwheel, Walgreens and Etsy in a study which measured the combined downloads for apps across both Google Play and the iOS store. Other company’s listed in the top 25 apps included H&M, Zappos and Victoria’s Secret.

The results from App Annie, which provides market data across the app landscape, came to a number of conclusions from the investigation, highlighting the increasing proliferation of mobile commerce, while also noting the increasing trend for apps to drive shoppers back in store; behaviour designed to combat the trend of ‘showrooming.’

“Some of the most successful brick-and-mortar retailers are flipping the script and using apps to drive consumers in-store,” stated the report, highlighting the in-app features from the likes of Walmart and The Home Depot which encouraged store visits.

“Built-in scanners enable easy product search, GPS functionality prompts location-based coupons and product suggestions and shopping lists linked to store maps enable efficient shopping. These tools bring consumers in-store by combining the convenience of e-commerce with the tactile experience of in-person shopping.”

“We have such a big opportunity to provide our customers with indispensable shopping tools to better shop in our stores and online.”Speaking about the results, Wendy Bergh, vice president of mobile and digital strategy at Walmart commented that it was necessary for the company to drive shoppers into a store, revealing that 50 per cent of the company’s customers had used mobile devices while browsing in store to assist in their purchasing decisions.

The report from App Annie highlights the continuing evolution of customer behaviour, particularly highlighting how consumers are choosing to combine channel activity in order to find the most appropriate products or the best bargains.
