Amazon launches voice-activated device for customer orders

Published on 15 April 2014 by in Latest News

Online retailer Amazon.com has announced the release of Amazon Dash, a device which gives customers the opportunity to order goods by speaking the name of the item into the handset.

The release of Dash allows customers to scan or speak the product they wish delivered to their door via the online retailer’s Amazon Fresh service. Nick Mediati, reporting on the announcement in PCWord.com, said the device was a “retro-futurist’s dream.”

‘Dash sends your order to Amazon Fresh using its Wi-Fi connection: All you need to do is review the order on your smartphone, tablet, or computer to schedule your delivery and make the purchase official,’ he wrote.

The move, according to industry commentators, offers an intriguing glimpse into Amazon’s intentions for the future (at present, the service is on an ‘invite-only’ basis). Writing in mycustomer.com, Adrien Nussenbaum, co-founder of Miraki, said the initiative was part of the online retailer’s data-collection strategy.

“It fits in clearly with Amazon’s strategy around collecting data, and so the really interesting thing will be to see how they plan to integrate that in their global CRM and personalisation strategy.”

The move comes following an announcement that Amazon would begin offering customers the opportunity to return goods via its locker system in the United States.
