The app, set for a nationwide launch in April, will be rolled out across the chain’s 7,000 U.S. locations. Functionality to order food and drinks for in-store pickup may also be added in the near future.

The release of the app is seen as an attempt to appeal to young diners; a demographic accustomed to paying for goods via their mobile phone. The news of the application follows a similar move from Taco Bell which is also trailing a mobile payment application across its Orange County locations in California. Burger King’s closest competitor, McDonalds, also announced it was testing a mobile application called McD, delivering deals and discounts for customers to redeem in 1,000 locations in the United States.

The announcement from Burger King follows a 2012 study from Chicago-based firm Technomic Inc into the frequency of mobile app payment; the research found 19 per cent of U.S customers had recently used a mobile device to order food delivery or restaurant pickup.mobile ordering app burger king Burger King looks to launch mobile application for in store orders

“What younger consumers are looking for is the ability to use their phones to do everything. The cell phone has replaced the wallet,” commented Darren Tristano, executive vice president at Technomic.

Here in the United Kingdom, pizza chain Dominos is often cited as one of the leading fast food brands utilising the mobile channel. Mobile orders account for 30.9 per cent of the brand’s total sales in 2013 with mobile revenues jumping by 91 per cent over the final quarter of the year, compared to the same timescale in 2013. The company also recently announced it was working with car manufacturer Ford to include an ordering application in upcoming vehicle releases.
