Smartphone tablet usage growth implications CIM New research reveals growing smartphone market

Global smartphone use is set to grow by 44 per cent by the end of 2013, according to a study from an international research house, with 1.4 billion phones set to be in operation by the close of the year.

According to the research from IAB, 57 per cent of those phones in the market will be running the Android iOS platform, while 21 per cent will be using Apple’s iOS software. However, the study is predicting a positive 12 months for Microsoft with sales of the Windows Phone estimated to result in 45 million devices in use by the end of the year.

Speaking about the research, Aapo Markkanen, senior analyst at IAB research said:

“The greatest fear for both Microsoft and BlackBerry is that the initial sales of their smartphones will disappoint and thereby kill off the developer interest, which would then effectively close the window of opportunity on further sales success.

“Our view is that the installed bases of this scale would be large enough to keep these two in the game. It will definitely also help that both firms have actively kept the developers’ interest in mind while designing and rolling out their platforms.”

The study also analysed the continued growth of the tablet market, a rate which is predicted to rise by 125 per cent by the end of year, resulting in 268 million tablets currently active in the global market. 62 per cent of these devices will be built on Apple’s iOS platform, while 28 per cent are will be running Google’s Android device.

The news should be interesting reading to those currently looking at how best to implement their corporate CIM systems across several different platforms. The study highlights the growing need for companies to be aware of emerging trends and the growth (or decline) of platforms in order to anticipate the need to provide CIM software for their customers.
