Sales from a mobile device may account for one in five online purchases by Christmas 2012, according to new research.

The figure, from the IMRG Capgemini Quarterly Benchmarking Index, predicted that 20 per cent of online sales would be produced from mobile handsets by year end, with one in three website visits being from iPhone or Android devices. The prediction comes after analysts tracked the evolution on customer behaviour of mobile phone devices.

Indeed, the research discovered that sales from smartphones had risen to 11.6 per cent of total online sales across the second quarter of 2012. Site visits from the mobile medium also accounted for 21.1 per cent of web traffic across the quarter.

Chris Webster, VP, consumer products and retail at Capgemini, said:

“The second decade of this century will be viewed in history as the decade when the mobile device became the point of access to digital services.

“This has happened very quickly for commerce services and, by the end of this year, 20 per cent of all digital commerce transactions will be completed on mobile devices. The mobile device will be the must-have item when you leave the house; just imagine when your passport and driving licence can also be held (or accessed) through the device.”

In related news, the same survey also discovered that mobile visitors were becoming more demanding in regards to website functionality. A bounce rate (visitors leaving a website without visiting other pages on the same domain) of 29 per cent from mobile users suggested that consumers were becoming more demanding when it came to websites being fully optimised for their handset. Indeed, in 2010, the average mobile visitor bounce rate was 22 per cent.
