21 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds prefer to buy products via the mobile phone according to a survey from Opinion Matters. The mCommerce survey, which interviewed 2,000 mobile users, also discovered that 10 per cent of respondents would like companies to send them promotions and marketing information via their smartphone.

Furthermore, the study revealed a number of insightful facts concerning the behaviour of the youth audience. Indeed, it was shown that 90 per cent of the demographic spent up to five hours a day on their phone. Nearly eight per cent of those questioned spent between five and ten hours on their mobile handset.

While the statistics sound promising from a mobile marketing perspective, the research also shed some light onto the receptiveness of the demographic to promotions. 55 per cent of those questioned felt offers should come from a company or brand they have previously used. Meanwhile, 61 per cent declared that they should be able to opt out of any text messaging mobile promotion.

Speaking about the results, Michele Turner, CMO from mobile promotions firm mBlox, said:

“It comes as no surprise that the younger generation is more amenable to mobile marketing than any other.

“But it would be fair to say that this doesn’t include spam texts or unsolicited phone calls. Companies need to recognise that mobile phones are very personal devices and consumers will only invite brands to communicate to them via their phones under their own terms.”

Last week, we reported that smartphone ownership in the United Kingdom had tipped over the 50 per cent mark. As more people continue to adapt to new technologies, it’s important for companies to understand how best they can leverage the mobile channel in order to interact with their customers.
