A new survey from Lloyds TSB and YouGov has shed some light onto mobile consumer use in the United Kingdom. The investigation, which interviewed 2,000 adults across the country, discovered that the street was the most likely place the public would use their mobile phone; 76 per cent of those interviewed said they most commonly used their phone while walking.

Meanwhile, 63 per cent stated they used their iPhone or Android handset when on public transport, while 55 per cent of respondents said that they used their phone in bed.

Ashley Machin, director of digital banking at Lloyds TSB, said:

“This research shows how quickly mobile phones are becoming the most versatile and important gadget in peoples’ lives. They are clearly changing the way we live, as evidenced by the speed with which mobile banking is growing.”

Indeed, earlier in the month, Kantar Worldpanel released data which predicted that over 50 per cent of the United Kingdom owned a smartphone. The researched also revealed that 71 per cent of all new phones sold in the country are now of the Android, Blackberry or iPhone variety.

Speaking about the research, Kantar company director Dominic Sunnebo said:

“For the first time ever, you are now in the minority if you don’t own a smartphone. With more people jumping on the bandwagon, there is huge opportunity for both retailers and manufacturers.”

The research from Kantar Worldpanel found that the Google-owned platform Android accounted for over half of the smartphones sold in the UK, while Apple held a 29 per cent share of the market. BlackBerry achieved a 15 per cent slice of the high-tech mobile device landscape.

Writing about the development in the Metro, Mark Molloy said:

“The increase in popularity of the devices is largely down to websites such as Twitter and Facebook, with 81 per cent of users accessing social-networking sites on their mobiles over the last month.”
