The launch of the iPhone 4S helped Apple shift three times as many phones as the company had sold in the previous three months, according to new research.

An investigation by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech found that the release of the company’s latest smartphone model had resulted in Apple taking 42.8 per cent of UK smartphone sales during October. The growth in sales was due to the release of the latest iPhone model, the iPhone 4S.

To date, Apple has a 27.8 per cent share of the smartphone market, while Android, the operating system from Google, powers 46 per cent of all high-end phone models.

What’s more, the research also demonstrated the increasing market shift towards smartphones in the United Kingdom. Sales of smartphones now make up 69.8 per cent of all mobile phone purchases and 44.8 per cent of the British population is now the proud owner of an iPhone or Android handset. The sales of feature phones during the same period halved, leaving just 29 million adults in the country without a smartphone.

The growing shift towards the smartphone market is good news for operators currently adjusting their CRM to accommodate this new contact channel. Over a third of the UK Mobile phone population uses social networks from their handsets; a 57 per cent change from the same survey in 2010. As more users turn to their mobile to compare prices and contact companies, it will be those companies prepared to manage this increasing interaction which will reap the benefits, including increased sales and improved consumer loyalty.
