Supermarket chain Asda is the latest in the long line of UK retailers to launch a transaction app. The application, which is now available to download for the iPhone platform, allows users to purchase stock from the supermarket, while also giving shoppers the chance to run price comparisons against rival supermarkets, such as Tesco and Morrisons.

According to Asda, the application was the next logical step for the company’s mobile development. Presently, 60 per cent of customers access the Asda.com mobile website via an iPhone, while the old Price Guarantee application was downloaded more than 300,000 times.

The new application integrates the existing ‘Price Guarantee’ application, giving consumers the opportunity to compare the price of their shopping against that an identical haul from other UK retailers.

Speaking about the app, Asda press officer Jo Newbould said:

“We wanted to get it right, and believe that the integration of our Price Guarantee app is something people will find truly useful.”

The launch of the Asda application comes after Tesco launched a mobile version of its Direct site earlier in the month, following the release of the supermarket’s m-commerce application in September. The Direct mobile site was introduced after a 300 per cent rise in mobile visitors to Tesco.com in the past 12 months.

This isn’t the first steps UK retailers have made to take advantage of the growing adoption of mobile phones though and we recently reported on how supermarkets were trailing free in-store internet in order to encourage more customers to shop online; John Lewis, Tesco and Sainsbury’s all plan to offer free wi-fi in the coming months.
