In a sign of the growing importance of the platform, search engine giant Google has launched an online campaign designed to encourage brands to improve their mobile web presence. The initiative, GoMo, gives companies the opportunity to view their website as a mobile browser, as well as providing techniques for organisations hoping to take advantage of the growing consumer base.

The website, which can be found here, offers businesses a number of resources for converting their website into a format more suitable for mobile handsets like the iPhone. A recent report from Forrester found that over 31 per cent of adults use their phone to access the internet at least once a month.

Indeed, the site offers a number of compelling reasons for businesses to prepare their websites for a mobile browser. These include:

  • By 2013, more people will use their mobile phones than PCs to get online
  • Mobile searches have grown by 4x since 2010
  • There will be online mobile device for every person on earth by 2015
  • 57 per cent of consumers would not recommend a business with a bad mobile site
  • 95 per cent of smartphone users have searches for local information
  • 50 per cent of mobile searches lead to purchase

Writing about the scheme on a blogpost, Jesse Haines, Google Mobile Ads Marketing, commented:

“The most important thing you can do to grow your business using the mobile web is to create a mobile-friendly website. If you don’t have a site that works for mobile, you’re missing out. Sixty-one per cent of users are unlikely to return to a site that’s not mobile-friendly. On the other hand, customers embrace sites that are built for mobile – consumer engagement increases by 85% with a website designed for mobile devices.”
