91 per cent of the top 100 brands have a presence on at least one app store, according to a new survey.

The investigation, from research house Distimo, found that 91 of the Interbrand best brands have an app on either the Apple, Android or other platform. This statistic is compared to only 51 per cent of companies 18 months ago.

The survey found that the iPhone is the most popular format for brands, with 86 per cent of companies having at least one application available on the platform. Meanwhile, 59 per cent of these organisations had a presence on the Android store. The least popular store was Nokia, with only nine companies having an offering on the system.

The average number of applications from each company is 24, while brands with the most applications include Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft and Google. Those nine companies without an app feature HSBC, Burberry and Corona.

The research from Distimo highlights the growing importance of mobile for companies and showcases those brands which have realised how crucial engagement on this platform is. Indeed, some organisations have already taken advantage of the medium; if you subtract the total number of applications from Disney and Sony, the average number of apps per brand falls from 24 to 15.
