A new blog post from Google has examined the growing trend of mobile shopping, highlighting just how important the smartphone has become in the ways consumers interact with brands.

The blog post from Johanna Werther, senior product marketing manager for Google’s mobile advertisement department, demonstrated the importance of the mobile format for customers. Her article, which focused on mobile search trends, predicted that in 2011, 15 per cent of ‘Black Friday’ web searches (the day after Thanksgiving which traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the United States) would be from mobile devices.

The blog also highlighted the buying behaviour of those consumers who included mobile in the buying process, with 65 per cent of high-end device owners using their device to find a business, before making a purchase in-store at that particular retailer.

“The important thing to keep in mind is that these mobile searches drive in-store purchases,” wrote Werther.

Furthermore, the blog went on to shed some light into the shopping habits of mobile users, noting that retail web searches from smartphones like the iPhone or Blackberry peak the week before Christmas as shoppers hurry to buy last-minute gifts.
