notw social media Customers turn against News of the World advertisers on social media

This week, dozens of different companies have experienced the power of social media as thousands of users demanded businesses removed advertising from the Sunday paper News of the World.

The pressure campaign, which began earlier in the week, saw millions of Twitter and Facebook users tweet company accounts or write on official corporate Facebook pages in an attempt to persuade several organisations to drop their ads from the publication. Companies who were set to advertise included Halifax, Ford and parenting site Mumsnet.

The below chart displays the number of tweets referencing the newspaper with the hashtag ‘#notw’. The majority of these messages were aimed directly at specific companies.

This sustained online campaign pressure eventually led to a number of large companies removing their advertising from the paper such as Halifax, The Co-operative Group, Ford and Virgin Holidays with News of the World’s parent company, News International, later announcing that this Sunday’s edition will be the last ever issue.
