m commerce statistics Retail goes mobileAt the last count, 13.5 million people in the United Kingdom owned a smartphone. The statistic, pulled from the latest Ofcom Communications Market Report, highlights the rapid growth in the adoption of smartphones, with ownership rising by 81 per cent over the year.

While Twitter and Facebook traffic has boomed because of smartphone usage (40 per cent of all tweets are sent via a mobile), the proliferation of high-end handsets has also led to the rise in mobile commerce.

Indeed, for the first quarter of 2011, total retail mobile traffic grew by 181 per cent, compared to a year earlier. Furthermore, mobile searches accounted for 11 per cent of all retail web traffic between January and April. These statistics, from the British Retail Consortium, adds to the growing evidence that consumers have more than happy to embrace m-commerce. Stephen Robertson, director general of the British Retail Consortium, said the results ‘sent a valuable message to any forward-thinking retailer that doesn’t yet have an m-commerce platform’.

Further evidence from America suggests that the rise in mobile retail use isn’t just limited to direct purchases. In a survey from Greystripe, 66 per cent of users acknowledged that smartphones played a role in their shopping habits, ranging from locating the nearest store, comparing prices and new product research. Out of those questioned, 15 per cent used their smartphone to directly purchase a product.

Here at numero, our role is to ensure that a company can manage and prioritise customer contact via any channel; email, text, Twitter and mobile.
